The Dakar Challenge, also known as the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge or Banjul Challenge, is an intrepid charity road trip that begins in the UK and culminates in Banjul, The Gambia. This non-competitive adventure sees participants driving older vehicles across thousands of miles, traversing France, Spain, Morocco, the Western Sahara, Mauritania, and Senegal before reaching their final destination. The primary objective of the Dakar Challenge is to raise funds for various local charities in The Gambia, and significantly, it directly supports Rotary Clubs in the region, including the Fajara Rotary Club.
Upon arrival in Banjul, the vehicles used in the challenge are auctioned off, with all proceeds dedicated to the charitable causes supported by the event. Since 2001, the Dakar Challenge has successfully raised over one million dollars for Gambian organisations, demonstrating a substantial and ongoing commitment to improving lives in the country. The Fajara Rotary Club, with its focus on health, education, and water projects, benefits directly from this unique initiative, allowing them to expand their reach and impact in addressing critical needs within Gambian communities.
